It is Inflammation of a spinal joint; characterized by pain and stiffness.
Types of Spondylitis are as follows.
Ankylosing Spodylitis: -
A chronic form of spondylitis primarily in males and marked by impaired mobility of the spine; sometimes leads to ankylosis.
In this type there is rhematoid involvement of the spine particularly sacro-iliac joints,
In young male patients.The condition has a strong HLA-B27 association and may
have associated inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, anterior
uveitis and Reiters sydrome.
It is also called Marie-Strumpell disease or Rhematoid Spodylitis.
Occasionally patients with ankylosing spondylitis will present after minor trauma
With unstable fractures.

Epidemiology: -
It is present in about 6 per cent of the normal population, is usually asymptomatic and is a common incidental finding.
